ADD / ADHD

It is estimated that between 3 and 8 percent of children have ADD, that is approximately 2 million children in the United States.  In a classroom of 30 children it is likely that at least one child will have ADHD.

What are the symptoms of ADD/ADHD?
Symptoms vary significantly among individuals, children with ADD/ADHD do not all have the same problems, some are over-active some under-active.  Some have great problems with attention other with compulsive behavior.  Others have significant problems with all three, attention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

Inattention
People with inattentive symptoms have difficulty keeping their mind on one thing.  Organizing and completing tasks are difficult..  If they enjoy an activity or topic they will give it their undivided attention.
Some symptoms are:
Forgetful, disorganized, easily distracted, ignores details, difficulty following directions and completing tasks, difficulty listening when directly addressed.

Hyperactivity / Impulsivity
It is difficult for people with these symptoms to sit still, they are constantly in motion, either dashing around or fidgeting in their seats.  They jump from one activity to the next.

Some symptoms are:
Fidgety, difficulty staying seated, often running or climbing, difficulty with quiet sedentary activities, excessive talking, interrupts others.

Of course, there are many reasons why children display behavioral problems and many children have been misdiagnosed with ADD/ADHD, a learning disability or any number of diseases.  Sometimes the symptoms are encountered only at school and not at home.   Could it be that the child is a normal healthy exuberant, highly active child?

Could it be that the child is allergic to certain foods or chemicals in his environment that are affecting his behavior in an adverse way?  Food and environmental allergies can cause abnormal learning patterns and symptoms.

What are some of the facial and body clues that a child may be having an adverse reaction to inhaled or ingested allergens:

  • red earlobes
  • dark blue, black or red circles under the eyes
  • red cheeks
  • wrinkles below the eyes
  • nose wrinkles from rubbing the nose upwards.

Some children act sleepy, some cannot sit still.  There are frequent lapses in concentration, as they cannot stay focused or follow advice or directions.

These symptoms may be noted after the ingestion of common offending foods such as, cereal, candy, corn products (popcorn) milk or dairy products, baked products, which may contain preservatives or additives, peanut butter, chocolate and fruit juices.
Some children develop symptoms of hyperactivity, depression, fatigue, headache, abdominal discomfort, hayfever or asthma.

Adverse reactions to foods, chemicals or common allergens include:

  • sniffing, stuffiness, coughing, sneezing
  • swollen eyelids, itchy, watery eyes, puffy bags under the eyes
  • frequent hearing loss, recurrent ear infections, pain or ringing in the ears.
  • recurrent leg aches, wriggling legs, hand or arms
  • itchy skin rashes
  • intestinal symptoms characterized by nausea, bloating, pain belching diarrhea or constipation.

The complaints after ingesting dairy products can include:

  • clucking sounds, throat clearing
  • nasal congestion
  • recurrent ear infections
  • constipation or diarrhea
  • leg aches
  • bed wetting

Some behavioral clues, activity or personality changes often seen include:

  • over-activity, aggression, loudness, irritability, hostility, silliness, or depression.
  • fatigue, falling asleep after eating or persistent yawning
  • impulsiveness, easily distracted
  • inability to concentrate, think or sit still
  • refusal to be touched or to respond to normal simple directions.

Children exhibit  many changes in writing, drawing, speech, co-ordination, attitude and school performance when they come into contact with the allergen.

Symptoms of ADD/ADHD are definitely real in some children.  Some children do have serious learning and behavior problems.  There is also a chance that your child may have food and environmental allergies.

Treatments and Solutions
Treatments may include allergy testing, allergy diets, avoidance of foods, improved nutrition, detoxification.
